Washington, United States - January 16, 2025 A dramatic rescue unfolded this morning near the Key Bridge when a deer became stranded on the icy Potomac River. Thanks to the quick coordination between the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA), Metropolitan Police Harbor Patrol, and DC Fire’s Fireboat crew, the animal was safely brought to land and released unharmed. The situation began just after 8 a.m. when community members alerted the BVSPCA Animal Control Dispatch. BVSPCA COO Aaron Johnson quickly assessed the scene and organized a response with emergency teams. The successful rescue marks a proud moment for BVSPCA, who has been providing animal control services in the District for just two weeks. “The swift teamwork of MPD and DC Fire saved a life today,” said BVSPCA CEO Adam Lamb. "We are grateful to the community and responders for their compassion and bravery." The deer, now safe, ran off once on solid ground, leaving behind a lasting testament to the power of community cooperation.
