Police sterilised a temple ahead of Chinese New Year celebrations in Indonesia.

The Malang City Police Satsamapta personnel conducted a security check at the Eng An Kiong Temple, in Malang City, East Java on January 29 morning.

Footage shows officers inspecting every corner of the temple, from the altar to the prayer room, using metal detectors.

A hundred joint personnel were deployed to provide security at temples during the event.

Police Commissioner Nanang Haryono said: 'This sweep was to ensure that Chinese New Year celebrations were safe and comfortable.'

The Eng An Kiong Temple is one of the cultural heritage sites in the region, often visited by tourists.

The Chinese New Year, celebrated on January 29, welcomes in the Year of the Snake with cultural traditions, family reunions, and hopes for good fortune in the coming year.
