STORYLINE:

Palestinian explosives engineers have started to remove dangerous explosives left behind by the Israeli military after its withdrawal from several areas of the coastal enclave.

"The remnants include unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices, posing a direct threat to the lives of civilians, particularly children and farmers," Hamas-run interior ministry senior official Ali al-Nadi told Xinhua.

"The engineering unit of the Gaza police reported that specialized teams are working around the clock to locate and safely dismantle unexploded munitions," al-Nadi said.

The official added that the task is particularly challenging due to the extensive destruction caused by military operations.

In a tragic incident, several Palestinians (including children) were killed by an IED hidden inside a can of food. The can was left behind by the Israeli military.

Local eyewitnesses told Xinhua that the device appeared to be humanitarian aid.

These incidents have sparked widespread outrage and calls for international investigations into the use of such tactics that endanger innocent lives.

Human rights organizations have warned of the ongoing risks posed by these remnants, urging the international community to provide technical and logistical support for their removal to ensure the safety of civilians.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect on Jan. 19, ending more than 15 months of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The ceasefire has allowed for people and humanitarian aid to enter areas devastated by the conflict. While the truce has provided Gaza's residents with a brief respite, humanitarian challenges remain and military remnants continue to pose a constant threat to daily life.
