It is one of the city’s oldest monumental fountains, designed during the Renaissance period. History: Built: Between 1547 and 1550, by architect Pierre Lescot and sculptor Jean Goujon. It was originally part of the celebration for King Henry II’s royal entry into Paris. Name: It is named after the former Cemetery of the Innocents that existed nearby. Relocation: The fountain was moved in 1788 from its original location to the centre of Place Joachim-du-Bellay in the Les Halles district. The fountain is built in a classical style with arched niches featuring bas-reliefs that depict nymphs and water themes. It was the first Parisian fountain constructed as a free-standing pavilion, intended to be both functional and decorative. It reflects the art and urban development of Renaissance Paris. The fountain remains a cultural and historical landmark in the heart of the city.
