US: Eighteen bodies recovered as rescue operation underway after U.S. aircraft collision
United States - January 30, 2025 Storyline: Eighteen bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River section in Washington, as rescue operation has been underway following the collision of a passenger plane with an Army Blackhawk helicopter near the Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, local media reported. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the midair collision occurred around 21:00 EST (Eastern Standard Time), involving a regional jet that had departed from Wichita, Kansas -- a landlocked state in the Midwestern region of the United States -- and a military Blackhawk helicopter. The incident happened as the jet was on approach to the runway of the airport, it added. American Airlines, which operated the ill-fated passenger plane, said in a statement that 60 passengers and four crew members were on board. The airliner has set up a hotline for those with loved ones onboard the plane. Three soldiers were on board the Blackhawk, CNN reported, citing a U.S. defense official. At a press conference held at 1:00 local time, a fire and rescue official said the rescue operation is conducted underwater and described the condition as "dangerous" for rescuers due to deep water and darkness. About 300 rescue personnel are reportedly battling the challenging conditions in the rescue operation which is estimated to take several days. Authorities have not yet released information on survivors or the cause of the accident. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagseth confirmed the U.S. Army and the Defense Department have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision.
