Five relatives were killed when their home was buried by a landslide in Malaysia on Wednesday morning.

The family were sleeping when several tonnes of mud from the hillside next to the property crashed down onto the roof. The debris fell onto them and killed them.

Staff from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department arrived at 3am and retried all of the bodies by 7am in the village of Kampung Lereng Bukit.

They were named as Sazarena Arabi, 41, Fatimah Dawi, 71, Irsyad Syairah, 16, Nur Raisyah Syahirah, 8, and Nur Rania Syafiqah, 11, who had all been staying in the same home.

Two others were injured. Nur Irsalina Syairah, 17, suffered a broken right leg, while Arabi Samsudin, 71, had minor injuries.

Ahmad Zahid, chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, urged the public to remain cautious following a continuous rain which has increased the risk of landslides.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said several areas in Sarawak and Sabah would experience continued rain until Friday.
