Philippine Coast Guard clashes with Chinese 'rogue' vessel
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) clashed with a Chinese 'rogue' vessel, ordering it to leave the country's waters.
A tense maritime encounter unfolded west of Zambales as the PCG confronted a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel patrolling within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) repeatedly radio-warned CCG Vessel 3304, demanding its immediate departure from the country's territory.
Footage shows a PCG personnel citing the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the 2016 Arbitral Award, asserting that the area is Philippine waters.
In a statement on Wednesday, PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said: 'It is worth noting that the PCG vessel successfully pushed CCG-3304 further away from Zambales, achieving an approximate distance of 85-90 nautical miles.
'The BRP Teresa Magbanua remains dedicated to safeguarding the maritime rights of the Philippines, as outlined by UNCLOS. Moreover, the Philippine Coast Guard's professional approach in countering the illegal activities of the China Coast Guard demonstrates the Philippine government's commitment to non-provocation and de-escalation.'
Expansionist China currently lays claim over almost the entire South China Sea, one of the world's busiest sea lanes. But a United Nations-backed tribunal in 2016 deemed its claims groundless.
The Communist rogue state - accused of genocide for its crimes against the Uyghur population - has been steadily increasing its influence in recent years through investment in developing countries.
