A wild deer was struck by an oncoming car before scampering on a provincial highway in Taiwan.

Footage shows the Formosan sambar deer emerging from the side of the road before it flipped over, smashing on the windshield in Changhua County on January 25.

The hoofed animal quickly hopped off and ran to the other side.

The driver hit the brakes while passengers can be heard screaming when it happened.

Car passenger Karen said: 'My aunt was driving my grandmother to see the doctor. We went to the police station so they could help find the deer in case it was injured.'

Karen added the officers told them it was a wild deer that ran down from the mountains to search for food.

She said: 'Our car was dented and damaged.'

The Formosan sambar deer is endemic to Taiwan and classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to continuous population decline across its native range.
