Thousands of Just Stop Oil supporters blocked The Strand in support of their comrades' prison appeals.

Footage shows activists protesting outside the Royal Courts of Justice in central London on January 29, rallying in solidarity with 16 Just Stop Oil demonstrators appealing lengthy prison sentences.

Inside, legal arguments challenged what campaigners have described as 'draconian' punishments, totalling 41 years, imposed between July and September 2024.

The convicted activists were sentenced following a government-commissioned report by 'Lord Walney,' a lobbyist with ties to oil and arms industries, which recommended that groups like Just Stop Oil be treated as terrorist organisations.

Police arrested at least two people—one before the protest and another afterwards—while high-profile figures, including Chris Packham and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, joined demonstrators in blocking traffic.

Protests in sympathy with the activists took place in Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, and New Zealand as barristers presented their cases in court.

Defence lawyers argued that the sentences disregarded legal precedents, the activists' motives, and their rights under European human rights law.

Just Stop Oil pledged to continue their resistance. A spokesman said: 'You can lock us up, but more will take our place as the climate crisis worsens.'

Followers of the climate agenda have resorted to increasingly aggressive public attacks in recent years - often using violence and intimidation to cause chaos on roads, at events, and in art galleries.

The Oxford Languages dictionary defines a terrorist as 'a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims'.
