Hotchkiss, United States - January 30, 2025 A mule deer doe is finally free after spending a month tangled in a tomato cage, thanks to a daring rescue by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and Hotchkiss Police. District Wildlife Manager Adam Wallerstein had been tracking the deer for weeks after reports from concerned locals. OnJanuary 30, with help from Hotchkiss PD, he managed to catch up with the doe. Wallerstein darted the deer to safely approach, and officers quickly used bolt cutters to remove the metal cage wrapped around its body. After tagging the doe to indicate it had been tranquilized, Wallerstein administered a reversal drug. The deer soon sprang to its feet and ran off, finally free of the entanglement. “This doe can now return to the herd and move without obstruction,” CPW said, thanking the Hotchkiss community for their help in reporting the situation.
