Dirk Erich Frauenheim, a German national, has been living in China for over 20 years.

In previous years, he and his family would use the long Spring Festival holiday to travel back to Germany and visit relatives.

This year, Dirk and his family decided to celebrate the Chinese New Year in China.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): DIRK ERICH FRAUENHEIM, German entrepreneur
"I've been staying here in Jintan for over 10 years. I have a German restaurant and also an AI software company. Before, during the Chinese New Year, I always stayed in Europe. This year is the first time that I celebrate the Chinese New Year here in Jintan."

Dirk and his family enjoyed various Chinese New Year customs, including Jintan paper-cutting, a Chinese folk art included in the List of UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DIRK ERICH FRAUENHEIM, German entrepreneur
"I think this kind of paper cutting is very difficult, but it's also very impressive as it needs a lot of skills. I learned today (for the) first time in the museum here and saw this type of paper cutting, and I'm really interested in learning it."

They also practiced writing Spring Festival couplets and the Chinese character "Fu (meaning blessing)" with a calligraphy brush.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): DIRK ERICH FRAUENHEIM, German entrepreneur
"I say this is 'Spring.' It was called 'Chun (meaning spring),' right? It looks very good. So I'll put it on my door, right? It's the Chinese tradition, to bring me happiness and luck for my family."
