On February 1st , 2025, a significant explosion and subsequent fire erupted at a troubled refinery in Martinez, California. The explosion, caused by a leak, set off a massive fire that sent black smoke drifting across the surrounding areas of Martinez, Pacheco, and Clyde. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents as the fire continued to burn. At a 5:20 p.m. news conference, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Bob Atlas confirmed that all refinery employees were accounted for, though three personnel sustained minor injuries. Atlas described the fire as "burning ferociously," with an unknown amount of fuel still fueling the blaze. California Highway Patrol had to slow traffic on the southbound 680 freeway to allow emergency vehicles access to the site. The fire's containment timeline remains unclear.
