Residents experienced severe thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind over parts of the state on January 31.

Footage shows roads submerged in ankle-deep muddy waters as drivers manoeuvre on the motorways.

The filmer said: 'I never thought I'd come to Hawaii and wear a raincoat, lol. It seems like there aren't many of them, so it was a good experience.'

Local media reported that six public schools were closed due to major flooding causing accessibility issues on their campuses.

Residents were advised to remain cautious as floodwaters recede and authorities assess the damage.

State health officials said: 'The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewers, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris.'

The storm has left thousands without power, roads blocked by floods and fallen trees, and grounded island air traffic.
