STORYLINE:
A Spring Festival celebration event was held Friday at the Dragon Kids Nursery School in Bratislava, Slovakia.
With the help of the volunteers from the Confucius Institute at the Comenius University in Bratislava, kids and their parents enjoyed traditional Chinese dancing, read stories about the festival, and learned Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, and dumpling-making.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): KATARINA RUMANOVA, Parent
"I really love the culture. I want to go to (learn) the calligraphy, to try for the first time. All the parents are interested in trying and (making) dumplings.
I'm always wearing red for the Chinese New Year."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DANA JANECEK CERMAKOVA, Founder of Dragon Kids Nursery School
"This is the second time that we are hosting it. We tried last year, and it was super successful. So we decided that we're going to do it every year for the Chinese New Year celebration.
We introduce Chinese culture to our kids all year long. I take it pretty important for parents to also understand what their kids are learning about, and how beautiful Chinese culture is.
We teach the Chinese language here. We teach our kids lessons of calligraphy and lessons of Chinese art and Chinese music.
Understanding a different culture can change your way of thinking and open your eyes to understand why some people are that way."
