Qatar: Qatar, Türkiye denounce US plan to 'clean out' Gaza, push for peace talks
Doha, Qatar - February 02, 2025 Foreign ministers of Qatar and Türkiye said they are opposed to U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial plan to "clean out" Gaza Strip, underscoring the urgency of adhering to the ceasefire agreement and initiating the second phase of negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday in Doha, and they discussed bilateral cooperation and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and Syria. In a joint press conference following the meeting, Fidan said that Trump's proposal to "clean out" the Gaza Strip violates international humanitarian law and should be opposed by all. He stressed that unless the Palestinian issue is resolved through the "two-state solution," conflicts will continue to arise. Al Thani echoed this sentiment, stressing that the key to resolving the Palestinian issue lies in ending Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and establishing an independent Palestinian state. "About the forced displacement or deporting the Palestinian people, Qatar has a very firm position against the deportation of the Palestinian people and this has been expressed yesterday in Cairo meeting among other Arab ministers as well. During our meeting, this is very clear for us that this is not a policy that we will support," he said. Al Thani stressed the importance of all parties adhering to the full implementation of the agreement's provisions and commencing negotiations on the second phase, as stipulated in the agreement. He further urged the partners in the international community to maintain pressure to ensure the success of these negotiations. He emphasized that no party should be allowed to obstruct them to prevent the closure of this irreplaceable window. "According to the agreement, phase two negotiations should start tomorrow. We started already engaging with the parties in order to define the agenda and to start engaging in those discussions. There is nothing yet clear about who are, where are the delegations will come, and when it's going to take place, but at least over the phone, these discussions have started, and we hope that we start to see some movement in the next few days," said Al Thani. Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement for the Gaza Strip on Jan 15. The agreement took effect on Jan 19, with the first phase lasting six weeks. During this period, Hamas agreed to release 33 detainees in exchange for Israel freeing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Both parties are set to begin the second phase of negotiations on Feb 3, focusing on the release of more detainees and the withdrawal of Israeli military forces.
