STORYLINE:
The African Mining Indaba 2025 kicked off on Monday in Cape Town, South Africa.
The four-day event is expected to draw more than 10,000 attendees, including some industry heavyweights.
In addition to the mining exhibition, this year's Indaba will also host several intergovernmental summits, panel discussions, investment meetings, technology and innovation hubs, and other activities.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): GWEDE MANTASHE, South African Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources
"This gathering is precisely about having discussions about Africa's mineral wealth and her people sharing in it. There is evidence that the African continent hosts significant reserves of industrially important minerals. With the growing demand for these minerals, Africa needs to assert its advantage and take charge of the growing demand."
Mantashe called for cooperation to shape the future of the African continent's mining industry.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GWEDE MANTASHE, South African Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources
"We, therefore, urge African leaders and investors across the continent to also promote the beneficiation of minerals. Please contribute to shaping it and ensure the output reflects the needs of the continent. In that way, we can contribute to building the Africa we want, if we are working together."
Since its inception in 1994, the Investing in African Mining Indaba -- often referred to simply as African Mining Indaba -- has been committed to shaping the trajectory of the African mining sector.
