China - February 03, 2025 China's oil heartland transitions to hybrid energy ecosystem (Voice_over) In China’s northeastern heartland, where oil once fueled the nation’s rise, a clean energy revolution is unfolding. (Stand_up) Guo Tianqi, Reporter: "Behind me is the Lamadian Oil Field, covering an area of 100 square kilometers. It has cumulatively produced 360 million tons of crude oil. Now, new energy PV panels and turbines have been installed here to provide cleaner energy for the entire production process." (Voice_over) Since 2023, the wind and solar power projects have generated over 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is enough to power around 70,000 urban households for one year. (Sound_bite) Kan Baochun, Technician, No. 6 Oil Production Plant at Daqing Oilfield: "Our oil field is located in an area rich in solar and wind energy resources. The utilization hours of thermal energy resources can reach more than 1,400 hours, and our wind energy resources can reach around 3,000 hours per year. Currently, clean energy can replace about one-third of total power consumption." (Voice_over) The Daqing oil field has been in operation for 65 years. Now, its hybrid energy ecosystem aims to replace 60 percent of the oilfield’s total energy usage by 2030, the same year when China has pledged to reach peak carbon emissions. Heilongjiang province is situated in the northernmost part of China. In winter, the temperature can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius, and a substantial amount of natural gas is needed for heating. Daqing Oil Field has long supplied natural gas to neighboring cities, including Harbin. China's clean energy transition has also lent a greener and smarter touch to the Asian Winter Games. (Sound_bite) Zhang Zhe, Technician, Gas Field Management Department, Daqing Oilfield: "To ensure the natural gas supply for the Asian Winter Games, we’ve reserved peak-shaving gas volumes, increased the frequency of on-site inspections, deployed emergency response teams, and kept emergency vehicles on standby at all times to guarantee the smooth transportation of natural gas." (Voice_over) The Chinese energy giant’s pivot to green energy mixes new and traditional technology, and could offer a powerful lesson: true sustainability may not be about abandoning the past, but reinventing it.
