A scene from hell as sugar cane leaves are burned as part of harvesting.

This very dramatic scene was captured in rural Thailand, in Phetchabun province. Phetchabun is famous for sugarcane and cassava plantations. All day trucks and tractors can be seen on the roads here transporting sugarcane and cassava and also timber. This practice of burning the sugar is a cheap and easier way to harvest it. And because its now dry season its very easy to burn. If they didn't burn the field they would have to use a very expensive machine to separate the sugarcane from the leaves which are sharp and dangerous to handle. However doing it this way is very bad for the environment.
