Ashes believed to belong to Buddha were paraded through the streets in India.

The sacred relics of Lord Buddha and his two disciples, Shariputra and Mahamoglan, were honoured in a grand procession in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on February 3.

Thousands of Buddhist monks from countries including Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Laos, along with throngs of followers, participated in the event, carrying Panchsheel flags.

Students also joined the parade, which began at the historic Kalachakra Ground and made its way to the Mahabodhi Temple area, culminating at the 80ft Buddha statue.

Footage shows the colourful and lively procession, with some participants dancing in the streets while others play instruments.

The sacred metal relic was transported on three chariots, accompanied by musicians from Sri Lanka.

The urn containing the ashes was installed at the Jayshree Mahabodhi Mahavihar, organized by the Bodhgaya Mahabodhi Society of India, granting devotees the opportunity for a three-day viewing.

An exhibition of Buddha's ashes and those of his disciples has been held in Bodh Gaya since 2006. Widely recognized as the place where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Bodh Gaya serves as a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide.
