A training plane crashed into the sea off the coast of Indonesia after having engine problems.

The Cessna 172 was being flown by trainee pilot Muhammad Fathan Nudina, 20, and instructor Rafie of Indonesian Aviation Academy when they encountered issues in East Java on February 4.

They plunged into the water with the aircraft but survived with the help of local fishermen who found them floating.

Footage shows the Cessna plane pushed into the shore of Muncar Beach hours after the crash. Waves carried it from the crash site to a coastal village where locals informed authorities for help.

Resident Siswanto, 50, who first saw the aeroplane, said: 'I went to the beach and it was already there. We did not know then where the pilot was or if they survived. I called my neighbours.'

A team was sent to the beach to retrieve the plane on February 5.

They removed the wheels and doors of the plane while some parts were missing including the head.

The aviation school has yet to provide the exact cause of the crash as there was no reported weather disturbance in the area when it happened.

Muncar Police Chief Mujiono said: 'The weather was sunny earlier. So it was not due to the weather, but because the engine was off.'
