Chinese tourists arrested over overstay and drugs possession in Bangkok condo
Four Chinese tourists were arrested over drugs possession and overstaying their visas in Thailand.
The suspects - identified by police as Xu Bo Hua, Wei, Zheng Bang, and Guo - were linked to Chinese gangs laundering money and operating call centre scams in the country.
They were detained in a condo in Bangkok on Tuesday, February 4, in a police crackdown on crime.
Footage shows the cops arresting Xu Bo Hua as he was returning to the building. He led the officers to his room, where police found the other suspects with a stash of ketamine. Xu was arrested for overstaying and possessing a Category II narcotic.
Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phuek-am, commissioner of Tourist Police, said: 'The team waited for Xu to return before approaching him for a search. He failed to produce a passport.
'He was arrested for overstaying and possessing ketamine. Wei and Guo were arrested for entering the country illegally, and Zheng was charged with overstaying.
‘We handed over all suspects to the Sutthisan Police Station for further legal action.'
Under Thai law, Ketamine is classed as a 'Schedule 2' drug. Offenders face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 100,000 Baht for possession. While those convicted of dealing can be jailed for up to 20 years, depending on the amount they were caught, the scale of the operation and their co-operation with officials.
Overstaying in Thailand incurs a fine of 500 baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 baht.
If caught by authorities rather than voluntarily surrendering, overstayers may face deportation, blacklisting, or even detention.
Those overstaying more than 90 days can be banned from re-entering Thailand for one to ten years, depending on the length of overstay.
