Baby elephant takes its first steps at Oregon Zoo
This is the heartwarming moment a baby elephant takes its first steps at Oregon Zoo.
The little calf was born on Saturday, February 1, at 4:29 pm, to 30-year-old Asian elephant Rose-Tu, following a 20-month pregnancy.
Footage shows the healthy female jumbo standing on her own within 15 minutes and taking her first steps shortly after.
Steve Lefave, head of the zoo's elephant programme, said: 'This was one of the smoothest births I've ever seen. Rose knew just what to do, helping her baby up right away.'
The newborn, estimated to weigh around 200lbs (91kg), is already nursing well and showing signs of a strong bond with her mother.
Zoo staff are keeping their distance to allow Rose-Tu and her baby time to bond but report that both are doing well.
While it may take some time before the calf meets visitors, she will eventually join the rest of the herd in Forest Hall.
Asian elephants are endangered, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 remaining in the wild.
The Oregon Zoo's elephant programme has been dedicated to their care and conservation for over 60 years.
