Washington, United States - January 31, 2025 Investigators are scouring the frigid waters of the Potomac River in a video captured on January 31, 2025, as they search for the combined flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk involved in the January 29 mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The tragic incident saw an Army helicopter collide with a Bombardier CRJ-700 regional jet operated by an American Airlines subsidiary. Both aircraft plunged into the river, claiming the lives of all three service members aboard the helicopter and the 64 people—60 passengers and four crew—on the jet. The UH-60 Black Hawk, a twin-engine military workhorse introduced in 1979, has a storied history in U.S. operations, from the raid that killed Osama bin Laden to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Its civilian counterpart in the collision, the CRJ-700, is a widely used regional jet with a strong presence in North American skies since 1999.
