Zürich, Switzerland - February 04, 2025 [Note: Royalty free music] Zurich Zoo's new Pantanal aviary is home to three endangered species of marmosets: the golden lion tamarin, cotton-top tamarin, and squirrel tamarin. These small, agile primates are distinguished by their long claws and incredible leaping abilities, allowing them to thrive in the rainforests of South America. Despite their social nature and strong family bonds, marmoset species are facing grave threats. The golden lion tamarin, once near extinction, has seen success through a conservation program that has helped build its population in Brazil. However, habitat loss continues to threaten its survival. The cotton-top tamarin, listed as critically endangered, faces a steep decline due to deforestation and illegal logging in Colombia. Similarly, the squirrel tamarin’s population is predicted to decline by 30% by 2035. While these species face a precarious future, the efforts at Zurich Zoo and European breeding programs provide hope for their conservation. Yet, without continued protection of their natural habitats, the survival of these remarkable creatures remains at risk.
