United States - February 03, 2025 Volusia County, Fla. — A massive Mola Mola, also known as an ocean sunfish, was freed from a stuck position on February 4 by a quick-thinking Volusia Sheriff's Deputy. The ocean sunfish, the heaviest bony fish in the world, had found itself in a dangerous situation but was safely released after Deputy Urquhart's intervention. Mola Mola can grow up to 14 feet vertically and weigh nearly 5,000 pounds. While harmless to humans, their curiosity often leads them to approach divers. Due to their size and clumsy swimming style, they can get entangled in drift gill nets or sea trash, like plastic bags that resemble jellyfish, posing a significant threat to their vulnerable population. Deputy Urquhart's swift action ensured the Mola Mola was freed without harm. The species is commonly found in temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, often spotted basking in the sun at the water's surface.
