Deported Indians returned on military plane as Trump cracks down on illegals
A Trump deportation flight landed in India yesterday while carrying illegal immigrants back home.
Authorities confirmed that a U.S. military C-17 plane, with at least 104 deported Indian nationals onboard landed at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday, February 5, at approximately 1:59 pm.
The flight, which departed from San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon, included 45 U.S. officials overseeing the deportation process, along with 11 crew members.
Reports indicate that Gujarat and Haryana had the highest number of deportees, with 33 individuals each, followed by Punjab with 30 deportees.
Three individuals were from Maharashtra, while two each came from Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh.
Other sources of deportees included Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Patiala, Mohali, and Sangrur.
Among the returnees, there were 12 minors and 25 women, with the youngest being just four years old. Forty-eight individuals were reported to be under the age of 25.
Punjab police have implemented strict security measures at the airport following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, as confirmed by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav.
Chief Minister Mann assured that the individuals would receive all necessary assistance from the state administration.
Punjab's NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal stated that deportation was preferable to long-term incarceration in US prisons.
Police stated that officials will carry out background checks to verify any prior criminal history before permitting their return to their respective states.
Local media reported that most of the deported Indians were apprehended at the Mexico-US border. It is believed they had left India legally but attempted to enter the country via the donkey routes.
Trump, known for his hardline nationalist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, has promised a sweeping crackdown on undocumented and illegal immigrants in the country.
On his first day of office, he declared a 'national emergency' at the southern border with Mexico.
He has also issued a memo telling the US Agency for International Development to adopt an 'America First' policy, threatening sanctions on staff who refuse to obey.
Dozens of deportation flights have also taken off, sending illegals back to their homeland in handcuffs.
