STORYLINE:
China witnessed a remarkable surge in its culture and tourism market during the eight-day Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Tuesday.
As China's most important festival, the Spring Festival has become a key driver for the tourism sector.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China saw a record 501 million domestic tourist trips during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, up 5.9 percent year on year.
The festive spirit, along with a series of visa-free entry and transit policies China introduced in 2024, attracted a growing number of international visitors eager to experience the celebrations firsthand.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHOW JING LANG, Tour guide from Malaysia
"I've noticed families gathering for reunion dinners and other celebrations. So, celebrating the Spring Festival here in northeast China has been a wonderful experience. I've really soaked in the festive vibe and all the excitement."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): VLADI, Tourist from Germany
"I think it's very very interesting. It's different from our culture, right? It's very nice and interesting for us to see."
China recorded 14.37 million cross-border trips during the Spring Festival holiday, including 958,000 trips made by foreigners, according to the National Immigration Administration.
In addition to tourism, the holiday period brought a boom in entertainment spending.
Box office revenues reached an impressive 10 billion yuan (approximately 1.39 billion U.S. dollars) between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, based on data from ticketing app Beacon.
The number of moviegoers also surged, with 187 million people flocking to theaters across China.
The vibrant holiday market, marked by thriving tourism and entertainment spending, is seen as a boost to confidence in the Chinese economy for the rest of the year.
