This is the dramatic moment firemen rescued a German Shepherd from a frozen lake in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) firefighters retrieved the hapless pooch stranded in the ice in a retention pond on February 5.

Footage shows one of the rescuers tied on a rope crawling toward the canine.

He then leashed the animal while other responders waited at the bank, extending the ladder step while another one hoisted the rope.

The official and the dog can be seen carefully creeping through the icy surface to prevent it from collapsing.

Local media reported that the dog was wrapped in a blanket and handed over to Animal Care and Control for further care after the rescue.

The animal reportedly did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
