Lava fountains surged as the Kilauea volcano erupted in Hawaii.

Dramatic footage shows lava and molten rocks bursting through a narrow notch in the cone wall within the crater, 164 ft (50 m) into the air on February 4.

Plumes can be seen billowing in the air as the intense fountaining emerges on the surface, flowing out of the vent.

Authorities said that while volcanic activity remains paused, the visible gas plume signals ongoing unrest at the summit.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
