UK: Boy, 15, appears in court charged with murder of Harvey Willgoose
A 15-year-old boy has appeared in crown court for the first time today (Thurs) charged with the murder of a teenager at a secondary school.
Video shows Harvey Willgoose's family leaving court.
The boy, who can't be named due to his age, is accused of fatally stabbing Harvey Willgoose, also 15, on Monday (Feb 3).
He is also charged with possession of a bladed article and one count of affray.
Harvey's mum Caroline watched the brief hearing from the public gallery at Sheffield Crown Court, during which the boy - wearing a grey tracksuit - spoke only to confirm his name.
He was not asked to enter a plea and will appear before the court again on April 28. A trial has been provisionally set for June 30.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC told him: "I am determined that you will be tried fairly. There is no question of that."
"Your trial is going to take place at the end of June, through until July."
"I have this morning amended the representation order to allow you to be represented by not only junior counsel, but King's Counsel also."
"You will be fully represented by solicitors and counsel."
The teenager was remanded in youth custody ahead of his next appearance.
The judge told him he must co-operate with his lawyers and appear at court for future hearings.
He added: "Occasionally young people like you think it will be a good thing if they sit and wait at the remand house and refuse to come to court."
"Well if you do that, firstly it would be very silly and secondly, we will not wait. The case will just go on with or without you."
"You will be back here on the date in April."
Police were called to All Saints' Catholic School at 12.17pm on Monday after reports of a stabbing.
Harvey was rushed to hospital but was tragically pronounced dead.
He was stabbed twice in the heart, a previous court hearing was told.
His heartbroken family paid tribute to the Sheffield United fan after visiting the scene on Tuesday to inspect the flowers left in his memory.
They said in a statement: "We are utterly heartbroken at the loss of our beautiful boy. Our lives are devastated and will never be the same again."
"We have lost a beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew and most importantly, a best friend to all."
"Harvey will be forever known for being a caring, loving and funny young man."
"At this difficult time we ask you to please respect our privacy as we grieve as a family."
Harvey's school friends also paid tribute to him at the scene, describing him as "one of the sweetest souls" who will "will be really missed."
One teenage girl, speaking with her mum's permission, said: "He was one the sweetest souls and he lit up every room."
"I will never forget him and all the funny comments he would make."
"He was loved by so many and will be really missed."
Steve Davies, the CEO of St Clare Catholic Multi Academy Trust, described Harvey as a "immensely popular young man" who was "precious and loved."
She said: "All Saints Catholic High School lost one of our own in the most shocking and tragic of circumstances."
"Harvey was an invaluable part of our school community."
"An immensely popular young man with his fellow students and teachers alike, he had a smile that would light up the room. Harvey was young. "
"He was precious. He was loved."
"We are all struggling to process what has happened and our thoughts and prayers are with Harvey's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
"It is unimaginable to comprehend what they are going through and whilst there are no words that will take away the pain and grief from Harvey's family and friends, I simply want to express, on behalf of the whole school community, our heartfelt condolences."
"A tragic and shocking incident such as this shakes us to our core and is the opposite of the ethos of what All Saints stands for – a loving, caring school community."
"We now need to focus on how we can support those grieving the loss of their precious family member, friend and student."
The school, which had been closed since the incident, reopened today.
