Hawaii, United States - February 04, 2025 Braving the heat of Kīlauea’s ongoing eruption, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists landed on the floor of Halema‘uma‘u crater on Tuesday, February 4, to collect fresh lava samples. During the helicopter overflight, one geologist captured a sweeping panoramic video of the crater. The footage begins with lava flows surging through the southern section before turning west to reveal two active eruptive vents. The mission, part of ongoing monitoring efforts, comes as Kīlauea’s summit eruption continues, keeping scientists on high alert.
