India: Foreign tourist on bike gets fatally attacked by wild elephant
Coimbatore, India - February 04, 2025 [WARNING: (Video contains) sensitive content] A foreign tourist was killed by a wild elephant while he attempted to cross a road, after being warned by the witnesses. The attack occurred on the Ghat roads of Valparai town, in Coimbatore district, in southern India’s Tamil Nadu, on the evening of February 4. Visuals show the man riding a motorbike toward the wild elephant blocking the road. Other motorists stop a few meters away from the tusker and try to alert the tourist. However, as he gets closer, the elephant attacks, using its tusks to throw him and his vehicle to the side of the road. The bystanders attempt to drive the animal away by honking their horns. The injured tourist tries to get up and walk toward his bike, but the elephant pushes him down and fatally pierces him with its tusks. Eventually, the tusker moves off the road as drivers continue honking. Speaking to Newslions, Venkatesh, a forest ranger officer in Valparai, stated that the highway was the only route to Valparai. Forest guards were stationed on both sides of the highway to control traffic until the elephant had safely crossed the road. But despite multiple warnings, the tourist attempted to cross the path of the elephant. He further mentioned that the tourist remained alive after the elephant attack for about 30 minutes to an hour before suddenly collapsing due to internal bleeding. He was taken to the hospital with severe injuries but succumbed to death despite medical efforts. The deceased, identified as 77-year-old Mickel Jurcen, was a solo bike rider from Germany who had travelled from Delhi to Valparai, where the tragic incident took place.
