A café owner who said he would give away free sausages if his team signed a Premier League striker is counting the cost after his promise backfired on transfer deadline day.

Ritchie Massey will be handing out hundreds of complimentary sausage sandwiches tomorrow (Sat) after his beloved West Bromwich Albion signed Southampton's Adam Armstrong on loan.

He had made the promise on social media as he never expected the Championship club to sign such a calibre of player due to the Baggies' financial issues.

Ritchie said he was delighted when the deal went through but quickly realised he had to stay true to his word, which is now set to cost him more than £1,000.

Ritchie was even messaged by WBA's official account on X, which jokingly told him: "Get the fryer on"."

He will now be giving away around 300 free sausages at Massey's Cafe in Oldbury, West Mids., ahead of Albion's home game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Ritchie said: "I just thought it wasn't happening, not with our financial difficulties, so I put the tweet out which said that if we actually sign him, there'll be free sausage sandwiches before the next home game."

"We're staying true to our word and we've got our staff ready to go. "

"We're probably going to sell around 250 to 300 sandwiches and it might cost me a few quid but hopefully people who come in will buy something else."

"He signed very late on and I was looking in Twitter around when the transfer window was closing at 11pm, and it took another 12 hours, but we eventually did sign him - and what a signing it could be for us."

"He's a Kevin Phillips-type of player and the sort of player we've been missing for a long time, who would look good in any squad and who every club should have."

Ritchie, who has been a West Brom fan since 1993, said he was inundated with messaging about his offer once the signing was made.

He said that while it might be an expensive day for him, he was happy to honour his promise and the publicity might be good for the cafe, which will be open from 8am ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off.

He added: "I never mentioned it outside of social media, but once the rumours came through that we'd signed him, a lot of people did start coming to me about the free sandwiches - but I've also had nothing but constant support from people."

"We are going to do exactly what I said we would do and we are looking forward to it, so it's going to be fantastic and hopefully puts us on the map a little bit."
