Storyline: The Tanzanian government is taking decisive action to combat the resurgence of Marburg virus disease (MVD), implementing quarantine measures and source tracing to curb the spread of the disease, said a local health official. The East African country is grappling with its second wave of MVD infections since 2023. The recent outbreak, which was detected in early 2025, has so far recorded two confirmed cases, prompting an immediate response from health authorities. According to Dr. Erasto Sylvanus, director of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit at the Ministry of Health, all necessary precautions are being taken to identify and contain the disease at the earliest opportunity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not issued any international travel restrictions related to the outbreak. The organization is providing support to Tanzanian authorities to strengthen control management and prevent the virus from spreading further. MVD is a severe hemorrhagic fever with symptoms including high fever, headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and bleeding. It is believed to be initially transmitted to humans by fruit bats in north Africa and can spread between humans via bodily fluids and direct contact. On January 14, WHO reported that eight people had been killed in a suspected MVD outbreak in Tanzania's northwestern region of Kagera, which borders Uganda. This is the second such outbreak in Kagera, after a similar incident in March 2023, which lasted nearly two months and caused six deaths. Shotlist: FILE: Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania - Oct 7, 2016: 1. We also have identified contacts. All contacts that have been with the cases or suspected cases have been isolated to make sure that we identify and manage a case when it happens. We also have done outbreak investigation to establish source of infection. Of course it is ongoing, but that is still being done at the moment." FILE: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Feb 24, 2021: 4.
