United States - January 18, 2025 Deputies rescued two people and three dogs from a burning vehicle after a brief chase ended in a violent crash early January 18, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy initially attempted to stop the vehicle around 2:00 a.m. for expired registration plates, but the driver fled. Authorities did not pursue due to the nature of the violation. Minutes later, deputies found the vehicle six miles away, crashed into a tree line and engulfed in flames. With the driver’s intentions unclear, a deputy rushed in, balancing the need to control the scene while battling the growing fire. Additional deputies arrived, using extinguishers from their squad cars to put out the flames and pull the occupants and animals to safety. Investigators believe the vehicle launched over a culvert before slamming into the tree. Both individuals suffered serious injuries but survived thanks to the deputies’ swift response. The investigation remains ongoing.
