South Sudan: Chinese peacekeepers in S. Sudan earn UNMISS' "Green Camp" title
Wau, South Sudan - February 07, 2025 Storyline: China's 15th peacekeeping engineer and medical units in Wau of South Sudan successfully passed the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) environmental assessment on Friday, earning the prestigious "Green Camp" title. The "Green Camp" assessment is a comprehensive annual evaluation conducted by the UNMISS to assess the environmental conditions of military camps from troop-contributing countries. The initiative aims to continually raise environmental standards in UNMISS task areas, preserve South Sudan's ecological environment and enhance the United Nations' positive image in the region. Under the assessment, camps are graded into three categories - green, yellow and red - with "Green Camp" status granting a one-year exemption from inspection. During the evaluation, a UN environment team conducted a thorough inspection of the peacekeeping camp's water management, wastewater handling, solid waste disposal, hazardous waste management, energy use, natural resource conservation and environmental communications. The Chinese peacekeeping forces met all the "Green Camp" criteria. Since arriving in South Sudan at the end of December 2024, Chinese engineering unit has successfully completed several key tasks, including airport leveling, road maintenance and upgrading main roads. They have also worked on repairing supply roads, relocating refugee camps and constructing underground shelters. The medical unit has treated 310 patients and performed 11 surgeries, earning widespread recognition from the UNMISS for their outstanding contributions. Shotlist: Wau, South Sudan - Feb 7, 2025: 1.
