Footage shows a car powered by liquefied petroleum gas exploding after the pensioner driving it lit a cigarette, igniting gas fumes inside the vehicle.

The video, filmed in Naberezhnye Chelny in west-central Russia on Wednesday, January 22, captures the car driving along a road when, all of a sudden, it explodes.

The 60-year-old driver of the Chinese-made Geely Emgrand was taken to hospital with burns to his face and hands after surviving the explosion, which witnesses extinguished.

He confirmed to local media that the blast occurred when he lit a cigarette while driving.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, with local media reports suggesting that the spark from the lighter may have ignited fumes from the liquefied gas in the car.
