STORYLINE:

Since its launch over three years ago, the China-Laos Railway has not only strengthened ties between China and Laos but also significantly boosted regional economic growth and cultural exchanges.

For Thailand, the railway has provided a new logistics option for trade with China.

In July 2022, the freight transit yard of China-Laos Railway's Vientiane South Station was put into use, marking the railway interconnection between China, Laos, and Thailand.

Through this railway, containers filled with Thai durians, longans, and other goods are imported to China, while Chinese exports like beer and medicine are transported to Thailand.

According to China Railway Kunming Bureau Group Co., Ltd., in 2024, 272 direct freight trains operated via the China-Laos-Thailand Railway, transporting 144,900 tonnes of transshipped goods. This marked year-on-year increases of 60 percent and 71.7 percent, respectively.

In addition, China and Thailand have jointly explored an innovative road-rail combined transportation model. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and chilled aquatic products from Thailand are transported by road to Vientiane, Laos, and then transferred to the China-Laos Railway's express service for direct delivery to Kunming, China. This model effectively reduces transportation costs and ensures efficient cargo flow.

Beyond trade, the railway has fostered people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Over the past three years, the number of monthly passenger trips has surged from over 600,000 at the start of operation to more than 1.6 million, further strengthening regional connectivity and cultural ties.
