France: French city hires retired doctors to address acute physician shortage
Storyline: The southern French city of Albi has opened a temporary clinic staffed entirely by retired doctors to address a shortage of physicians. The medical center, the first of its kind in France, has eight physicians, aged between 65 and 79. One of them is Yves Carcaillet, who has been a family doctor for five decades before retirement. He established the medical center after the mayor of Albi approached him with a possible solution to the medical problem. Wherever you find retired doctors and ask them if they still want to work, they will say "yes", he said. The shortage of healthcare practitioners is actually a national problem, for which the new Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has promised to raise health spending by more than 3 percent. In big cities, access to clinics is less of a problem, but the country's medical density is uneven. The so-called "medical deserts" are in smaller places like Albi, where booking a doctor's appointment is a nearly impossible task. The causes of the ill health of France's medical sector are many, and as fewer students enroll in medicine, the average age of doctors is growing. With a lack of qualified doctors, France has had to adapt with other healthcare professionals filling in some of the gaps. One example of how medical care expanded was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when pharmacists delivered coronavirus vaccinations. In "medical deserts", some hospitals have even closed their overnight emergency services. Other cities, such as Calais in the north, and Paris, have opened medical centers similar to the one in Albi.
