Mexico - February 10, 2025 Popocatepetl, Mexico – With the looming risk of volcanic activity, Proteccion Civil Nacional will inspect evacuation routes around Popocatepetl, announced coordinator Laura Velazquez Alzua. As part of the National Standardized Plan, officials will assess routes in the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, and Tlaxcala to ensure they remain clear and functional in case of an emergency. Velazquez Alzua emphasized the need for unobstructed, stable infrastructure to prevent evacuation delays. Authorities will also inform residents about safety measures and the health risks of ashfall, which many have come to normalize. Despite continuous monitoring, no evacuations have been necessary in 2024. The last major alert came in 2022 when activity briefly escalated to Phase 3. Officials assure that life near "Don Goyo" should continue as usual while 24-hour surveillance remains in place.
