Houston, United States - February 10, 2025 NASA astronauts Sunny Williams and Butch Wilmore completed a crucial spacewalk last week, marking their contributions to keeping the International Space Station (ISS) running smoothly. This spacewalk, which lasted five hours and 26 minutes, was the 274th in the station's history. During the mission, Williams and Wilmore removed a vital radio frequency group (RFG) antenna from the station's truss and collected surface material samples from the Destiny Laboratory and Quest airlock. The RFG, an S-band antenna essential for station communications, had previously resisted removal during past spacewalks. However, using a specially designed wrench, the duo successfully freed the antenna, which will be refurbished on Earth. The RFG is critical for station operations, ensuring communication signals are transmitted and received, as well as helping maintain the station's orientation. This spacewalk's maintenance work could have a lasting impact on ISS communications, ensuring the station continues its vital mission in space.
