STORYLINE:
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit opened on Monday in Paris, focusing on the discussion of global AI governance.
"It is high time that we move from science fiction to the real world of application of AI," Anne Bouverot, France's special envoy for AI, said at the opening ceremony.
She stressed that digital transformation, including AI development, should align with ecological transition efforts. She also urged participants to focus on AI applications that serve the public interest.

"On a global basis, we need to have more emphasis on transparency on a lot of aspects of AI. In particular, I'm concerned about the environmental impacts. So AI models can have a really huge amount of energy that's required, or they can be really efficient. The problem is a lot of AI model providers are not sharing that energy efficiency. So I am hoping that policymakers maybe in terms of a global agreement can come together and ask for that type of transparency. I think there are a lot of other ways regulation can play into that without harming the innovation and kind of the future potential of this technology."
According to the organizer, the two-day summit has drawn representatives from nearly 100 countries and more than 1,000 stakeholders from the private sector and civil society.

"So I really am for opportunity globally to develop AI. I also don't want this all to be centered in a certain region in the world. Therefore, also in our project about intersectionality, we wanted to be more equality and equity and opportunity. And then if we also center it more in different regions in the world, then we'll have more diverse thoughts and more perspectives. So I hope it will not be banned. For example, the sales of the chips you mentioned. And I think there should be more spread throughout the world that we can have more sources of development, more innovation, and then really foster a common language to have a dialogue on what we really care about in AI ethics."
The first day features a forum discussing such themes as public interest AI, innovation and culture, and global AI governance.
