Baggage handlers 'stole gold jewellery from passenger's case in aircraft hold'
Four baggage handlers were arrested for allegedly stealing a female passenger's jewellery from her suitcase at an airport in Indonesia.
The airport ground staff employed by low-cost airline Lion Air reportedly plucked 7.6 million IDR (375 GBP) of gold from female traveller's case while it was in the plane's cargo hold.
Upon landing at the Haluoleo Airport in Southeast Sulawesi, the passanger was said to have gone into hysterics when she found the valuables missing from her luggage.
Footage shows the woman frantically showing airport staff her pink jewellery box where the accessories were said to have been stolen at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in South Sulawesi on February 8.
Police launched an investigation and detained the four Lion Air workers on duty at the time of the alleged theft.
Officers also confirmed the suspected robbery occurred while the alleged victim's suitcase was still at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
AKP Muh Ansar, Ranomeeto City Police Chief, said on Monday that the suspects have been arrested.
He said: 'The baggage handlers are still in the process of being questioned. This alleged crime occurred on Saturday, February 8, 2025. It is estimated that the suitcase was in the hold of a Lion Air jet with flight number JT 992 that arrived at Haluoleo Airport in the afternoon.'
The missing possessions included a 1.85 gram gold ring, a 2.98 gram gold bracelet, and a black watch all worth around 7.6 million IDR (375 GBP).
