STORYLINE:
On Tuesday, Chinese tech giant Huawei reaffirmed its dedication to empowering women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) during an event in Nairobi celebrating the International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): GAO JUNHUI, Chief finance officer of Huawei Kenya
"At Huawei, we recognize the transformative power of STEM in shaping lives, industries and nations. We also know that the full potential of STEM cannot be realized unless women and girls are at the front, breaking the barriers and also taking your rights in the specific field. Today is about showcasing role models who are here that can inspire more girls and more ladies to celebrate what amazing women have done."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GLORIA WAWIRA, CEO of National Youth Council
"What are the opportunities that are low-hanging and can enable our population, particularly our young people, not only to be the workforce, but also entrepreneurs and citizens of the world? The answer to that question is technology."
Michael Kamau, manager of the Huawei ICT Academy, said the firm has prioritized digital inclusion by encouraging more women and girls to enroll in specialized courses such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.
The International Day for Women and Girls in Science, observed annually on Feb. 11, advocates for bridging the gender gap in a historically male-dominated field while promoting sustainability, peace, and shared prosperity.
