Search and rescue team swept away by raging floods in Indonesia
Rescue officers were swept away by raging floodwater as they battled to save stranded residents in Indonesia.
Five officers were aboard the rubber dinghy when it was battered by the strong current during their rescue operation in Maros, South Sulawesi, on February 11.
Dramatic footage shows the officials approaching a stilt house to evacuate residents who were caught up in the deluge, brought on by heavy rain.
However, the river's powerful current dragged them toward a dam, forcing them to jump one at a time upon realising the boat might capsize at any moment.
Three men remained on board, with one attempting to control the speed of the watercraft.
However, due to the rapid flow of the water, the boat lost its balance and was eventually carried away, prompting the remaining rescuers to leap out of the vessel to avoid being trapped in the whirlpool.
Frantic residents witnessing the incident could not help but scream in fear.
Local media reported that all team members managed to save themselves and were assisted by police officials and other responders using ropes for them to grab onto.
They reportedly did not sustain any serious injuries in the disaster.
Search and rescue teams deployed across the region and nearby cities are relentlessly evacuating families affected by the flood and transporting them to evacuation centres.
Local media reported that roads connecting Makassar City and the northern region of South Sulawesi are currently impassable due to the flash flood.
Floods were reported to have submerged 14 districts in Maros Regency under 3ft ( 1m) of water.
