A male white shark in the Atlantic Ocean has become the largest ever to be tagged by a research group.

The 13.9ft (4.2m) beast which has been named Contender weighs an estimated 1,653 lbs (750kg). It was tagged on January 17 by OCEARCH, a global non-profit organization focused on ocean research, aimed at providing scientists with vital data about marine life.

The shark was found approximately 45 miles off the Florida-Georgia coast.

Footage shows authorities preparing to release Contender after attaching the satellite tag. His movements will be tracked for up to five years, offering crucial insights into migration patterns.

As part of OCEARCH's mission to enhance shark research and ocean conservation, researchers also collected biological samples, including urogenital material.
