Duino, Italy - February 11, 2025 A remarkable environmental cleanup effort led to the recovery of a historic stone fountain and two trash bins near the coastal road between Trieste and Sistiana on Tuesday. During a training session near the natural tunnel in the area, Trieste Fire Department’s SAF (Speleo Alpine Fluvial) teams discovered the items on a karst cliff, about 50 meters below the road. The fountain, dating back to 1931, had been knocked out of place by a past car accident. Notifying local authorities, the fire department planned an operation to retrieve the fountain and trash bins, ensuring the historical artifact would be restored for public display. The operation, which involved specialized teams including speleo alpine fluvial personnel, a crane, and NSSA (Underwater Rescue Team) specialists, was carried out in cooperation with Friuli Venezia Giulia Strade. The fountain was successfully returned to the town of Duino-Aurisina for preservation.
