A young footballer ran onto the pitch and floored his opponent with an elbow in the Singapore Premier League.

Aniq Rizqin, 19, from the winning team, Tanjong Pagar United, was doing post-match handshakes with Albirex Niigata players when he punched one of the lads in the face at Jurong East Stadium on February 10.

Tensions quickly escalated with Aniq - jersey number 65 - being calmed down by his teammates while three players from Albirex Niigata, a Japanese team, charged towards him as he backed away.

Coaches and game organisers rushed to the field to separate the boys, and Aniq was pulled to the side of the field.

However, Aniq escaped his friend and sprinted towards the opposition team members, striking one of them in the chest.

Chaotic shows footballer Aniq thrusting his elbow onto Kenji Austin Ho, 20, before running away.

Kenji fell to the ground as teammates restrained Aniq. He was rushed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and was discharged on February 11.

Police were alerted later that night and arrested Aniq.

As the investigation continues, Tanjong Pagar United apologised to Albirex Niigata for the violent incident.

The Singaporean team said: 'The actions displayed by our player do not reflect the values and standards of our club. We do not condone violence and unsportsmanlike behaviour.'

A spokesman said they are considering terminating the youngster's contract.

He said: 'Such behaviour is unacceptable and goes against the core values of sportsmanship and fair play that we uphold at our club.

'We believe that immediate action must be taken. We will convene and decide after getting all facts from the police.'
