This is the moment the north vent of the Kilauea volcano roars into life before erupting in Hawaii.

Footage taken by geologists from the caldera rim shows a small cone forming within the vent after sporadic spattering on Monday, February 10.

Episode nine of the Kilauea eruption began on February 11, with fiery molten bursts illuminating the night.

Lava rock surged from the Halema'uma'u crater, with fountain heights reaching up to 200ft (61m) from the north vent.

Authorities said the south vent, split into two streams, sent lava soaring up to 100ft (30m).

Although activity had decreased since the eruption began that morning, the spectacle remained a striking display of nature's force.

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
