A historic fountain was recovered from a cliffside in Italy.

The remarkable discovery occurred during a training session by the Trieste Fire Department's Speleo Alpine Fluvial (SAF) near the coastal road between Trieste and Sistiana on Tuesday, February 11.

The teams discovered the historic stone fountain and two trash bins on a karst cliff, about 164ft (50m) below the road.

After notifying local authorities, the fire department planned an operation to retrieve the items, ensuring that the historical artifact would be restored for public display.

The operation, which involved specialised teams, including SAF personnel, a crane, and NSSA (Underwater Rescue Team) specialists, was carried out in cooperation with Friuli Venezia Giulia Strade.

The fountain, dating back to 1931, had reportedly been displaced by a past car accident. It was successfully handed over to the town of Duino-Aurisina for preservation.
